The Austin Music Foundation (AMF) today announced the launch of its year-long pilot program entitled the Austin Music Incubator. The new initiative, which becomes AMF's signature program, helps selected artists build a sustainable music career by offering them mentoring, training and financial support to complete and market a full-length album. Given the tremendous amount of talent that exists in the Austin community, the Austin Music Foundation created the Incubator as a new and unique model to support local music. "There's no other program like this in the country," said Colin Kendrick, Executive Director and co-founder for Austin Music Foundation. "The Incubator fills an essential need; helping musicians become educated business people able to sustain their own careers." The Incubator will not only allow artists studio time to record a new album, but will also help them learn the process of building their business through the use of marketing plans, promotion, and financial planning. Through the success of the incubator artists, AMF will be generating national recognition for Austin and it's sizable talent pool. Wofford Denius, Director of The Cain Foundation and a music attorney in Los Angeles, was the first to visualize the potential benefit that the incubator model held for Austin musicians. Mr. Denius represents numerous Austin artists, and is very active in the Austin music community. In recognition of this innovative model, The Cain Foundation granted the Austin Music Foundation seed funding to launch the Incubator and carry it through its pilot year. With this funding, AMF will be able to put three artists through the Incubator in 2003, with up to $15,000 allocated for each artist. AMF's Advisory Board will review applicants and select three finalists for each genre: rock/pop, urban/hip-hop, and singer-songwriter/country. All of the finalists will perform at a showcase where one finalist from each genre will be chosen as the Austin Music Incubator artists/bands for 2003. Final selection will be announced during this year's SXSW Music Conference. All artist applications must be postmarked no later than January 31st, 2003.
