🎷 About Big Wy’s Brass Band 🎷
Big Wy’s Brass Band is a New Orleans style brass and funk band based out of Austin, TX. The band was originally formed in 2014 by Westlake High School students looking to have a good time. After a few jam sessions, Wyatt Corder (Big Wy [Large Wyatt]) brought in other members to join the band.
In 2017, Big Wy’s made its first international debut by representing the United States at the Instituto Guatemalteco Americano (IGA) 2017 International Jazz Festival in Guatemala, touring the country while performing and giving master classes. Guatemala was quickly followed by the selection of Big Wy’s for the 2017 CR Promising Artists Tour in Costa Rica. During the tour, Big Wy’s Brass Band was hosted by Centro Cultural Costarricense Norteamericano (CCCN) and played around the country, with the additional honor of performing for President Luis Guillermo Solís at the Afro Descendants Day parade in Puerto Limón.
This funky ensemble has also had the privilege of performing other well-known events and venues in and around the Austin area, such as “Carnaval Brasilerio” at the Palmer Events Center alongside the nationally renowned Austin Samba School, “Swamp Fest”, the “HONKTX!” 2016, 2017, and 2018 Brass Band Festivals, the SXSW 2017 Habitat for Humanity Enviromedia Party, and several SXSW 2018 Official Showcases alongside groups including the world renowned Preservation Hall Jazz Band. During mid-February of 2018, Big Wy’s Brass Band had the additional honor of performing and speaking for TEDx@youthaustin.
Since the band’s formation, Big Wy’s has enjoyed making music, both for themselves and for their audiences.
